July No.5 Flat pack Wardrobes
Flat Pack Wardrobes - why not?
Flat pack kitchens are now well publicised and popular. The same system of construction also applies to a large range of modular household products such as: wardrobes, vanities, bookcases, hi-fi cabinets. The savings in construction of robes is not as great as with kitchens because of the shorter time involved in their construction and installation. The flatpack wardrobe can be made to any design with pullout drawers or shelves, with hinged doors or sliding doors, and with matching side panels if necessary.
Assembly
Fitted wardrobes are often constructed without backs or sides, using the existing walls as sides and backs. However, this often causes problems for handypersons as the unit must be fitted square to ensure properly fitting doors. The flatpack construction is a complete box with a back and this ensures that the cupboard is square. The cupboard can also be constructed in the middle of the room face down. It is then stood upright and slid into position on top of a kickboard. The doors can then be fitted onto a completely square carcase. It is a more expensive option than using your walls and floors, but it avoids the moisture and mould smell problem from the brick wallswhere moisture is a problem. In this system you have a completely sealed cabinet which can be disassembled and moved or even used as a room divider. The Smartpack wardrobe track and wheel system can be installed with the same cabinets if a solid cabinet is required. The smartpack track and wheel system has large rollers running on the bottom track and thus not taking the full door weight hanging from a top track. The track allowance of 90mm is made by an icreased bottom and top of the robe. This gives a full 600mm depth wardrobe. The Smartpack sliding robe system is a cheaper alternative for a sliding door wardrobe. The cupboard is made up of an internal carcase for shelves and, or drawers. These cabinets are seperate and the divisions and shelves are installed around these units using the smartpack U Chanel. (See Wardobe section . The sliding doors are running on the track fitted outside of this construction. This is a really cheap and easy system for a high quality sliding robe. See page 2 of the sliding wardrobe instruction sheet for a detailed plan of the assembly components.
Drawers internal in the robes do not have handles but rather use 25mm gaps between the drawers as finger grips. This prevents the doors from knocking the handles and also allows a larger drawer depth. An attactive addition to the wardrobes, and to make them look really built in, fit a 100mm upstand to the top of the robe as a fixing point for the cornice. The cornice is then extended across the top of the robe and joined to the rest of the room cornice. The effect is a completely built in look.
Choice of Doors
There are many types of doors available for varying styles and budgets, including solid timber recessed panel doors and MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) routered panel doors, painted or ready for you to paint. Plain panel MDF doors or melamine flatpanel doors are the cheaper end of the budget range while still looking attractive. The colour range is huge. The smartpack wheels are fitted behind the panel doors for the sliding doors. For hinged doors these are predrilled for hinges and are easily clipped onto the hinge plates fitted to the carcase. Mirror or opaque glass sliding doors can be ordered for sliding robes and are very easy to install.
A wardrobe should take about 2-6 hours to fit depending on the size and number of doors and internal shelves and fittings. Hinged door cupboards are just as easy to construct. Fillers on the side of the hinged carcases are the best way to fill the uneven gap between the vertical carcase side and the usually out of vertical wall. Leave at least 16mm for the filler. Visit our Online store to see all the wardrobe accessories that can be used to fit out your robe.
